Back in 2009, I helped to create the world’s first virtual festival. Powered by Spotify’s new technology, we persuaded a huge number of recording artists to provide us with playlists which we then allowed users to listen to for a limited period only in exchange for a voluntary donation to Cancer Research UK.
Artists included the Stereophonics, Beverley Knight, Reverend & The Makers, The Go! Team and Fred Deakin from Lemon Jelly.
We were featured in the Guardian and a number of tech blogs, as well as attracting attention from Spotify. They were good enough to give us free advertising spots which led to a panicked search for a V/O artist, a studio and some recording time – all for free – to get the ads to Spotify in time.
Cancer Research UK also supported our endeavour, publicising it internally, as well as with posters in store.
